Publishing Basics
What does a publisher actually do?
A publisher manages the full lifecycle of your book, editing, cover design, interior formatting, metadata, production, distribution, launch planning, and ongoing title management.
Will I keep the rights to my book?
Rights, ownership, royalties, responsibilities, and deliverables are clearly documented in the publishing agreement. Transparency is essential.
What is an ISBN?
An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) identifies a specific edition of your book. It does not determine copyright ownership.
Distribution
What does distribution mean?
Distribution is how your book reaches readers through retailers, online stores, libraries, and other channels. It’s the delivery system that makes your book available.
Can my book be available through Amazon and bookstores?
Yes. We distribute to major online retailers and the book trade. Availability does not guarantee shelf placement or featured visibility in stores.
What about libraries?
We supply libraries through multiple channels, including Ingram Library Services. Selection is at the discretion of each library and is not guaranteed.
Audiobooks
Many books can be produced as audiobooks. The process includes narrator selection, recording, editing, mastering, and distribution.
Author narration can be a strong option for memoir, personal development, and subject-matter expertise.
- Professional narrators bring experience and consistency
- High-quality production enhances the listener experience
- Audiobooks expand reach to new audiences and markets
Book Marketing
Publication is only the beginning. Effective marketing connects your book with readers.
- Author branding and platform development
- ARC campaigns, reviews, and influencer outreach
- Advertising, social media, and email marketing
- Book trailers, A+ content, website, and landing pages
- Launch campaigns, events, and ongoing promotion
Author Branding
A clear author presence helps readers and the media find and connect with you. A professional website, author biography, newsletter, and selective social media presence build trust and credibility. Focus on the platforms that serve your goals best. Quality and consistency matter more than trying to be everywhere.

How to Evaluate a Publishing Company
Before signing with any publisher, ask:
- Who owns my copyright?
- What rights am I granting?
- How are royalties calculated and paid?
- What am I paying for, exactly?
- Who controls my accounts and data?
- What happens if I want to leave?
- Can I verify their books, team, and track record?
Be Cautious of Companies That:
- Guarantee bestselling status or overnight success
- Guarantee bookstore placement or reviews
- Pressure you to pay immediately or today
- Use vague or confusing rights language
- Hide their team or physical location
- Claim fake affiliations or industry awards
- Make promises they won’t put in writing
